Success Story
Raymell injured himself in August 2012 while working for a moving company. The van that he was a passenger in was involved in a motor vehicle accident and he experienced several injuries to his head, neck, back, legs as well as amputation through his dominant right side elbow. Raymell's success is directly related to his unwavering will and to the strong interdisciplinary team that surrounded him during this rehabilitation process. His care was closely managed by his Paradigm Workers Compensation Network Managers, Sherie Shuster, MSN, RN, CCM and Lynda Kirchner, RN, was supported by NYU Langone Physiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, MD, Physical Therapist Amanda Soto, PT, DPT, and Occupational Therapist Claribell Bayona, OTD, OTR/L as well as the team at Handspring.
Raymell started a business of his own in 2020, during the pandemic, after several attempts to return to work for other companies as a driver. This led him to consider starting his own company, which delivers pharmaceutical and infusion products to patients throughout the NYC/NJ area, and as far north as Rockland and Orange Counties in NY. He has over 20 employees, and multiple contracts with pharmacies in the NY area. He also participates in a summer program for unemployed Brooklyn youth to engage them in the work force as paid interns, and expose them to successful ventures and to make money while doing so.
What Stands Out
Raymell's dedication to Occupational Therapy training led to his status as both a super user of prosthetic technology and Handspring Hero. His goals were to regain his independence and be able to care for not only himself, but also his family. He wanted to be able to cook and host BBQ's and had aspirations to return to working out at the gym. Raymell first mastered body powered technology and then graduated to a hybrid externally powered prosthesis once his residual limb matured and volume stabilized. Activity specific terminal devices and a lifelike passive functional aesthetic silicone hand restoration rounded out his arsenal of tools. Each day he chooses the prosthesis and terminal device that will best suite him for his expected activities.
A game changer for Raymell was when he was introduced to Click Medical's adjustable socket and suspension system. Incorporating a BOA dial into both his body powered and hybrid externally powered socket design allows for him to adjust the fit throughout the day for optimal fit, control and comfort.
Raymell has also enjoyed personally designing his prostheses featuring his favorite sports teams including the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets.
