Success Story
Cordell traveled all the way from the country of Guyana in South America to receive specialized care from the NY Handspring Team. Assistance was provided by Handspring for his Visa application to allow for travel to the United States for medical treatment, which was unavailable in his home country. Cordell made it clear from the beginning that function was most important to him with the ultimate goal of returning to his vocation making window and glass doors as well as independence in his daily activities. He was fit with a Point Digits Pivot+ Thumb prosthesis, which incorporates custom milled silicone, 3D printed frame and a Click Medical RevoFit adjustable socket system.
Tell us about yourself!
"I worked as a window/glass door fabricator in a factory for the past 22 years. Aside from work, I enjoy playing pool with my friends and traveling. I love traveling around Trinidad, Jamaica, and the Caribbean and taking in the beautiful natural sights. I also enjoy swimming, hiking, and being outdoors."
What led to your amputation and how has it impacted your life?
"I was using a saw at work, it grabbed my glove and pulled my hand into the machine. My accident was in February of this year (2025). Mentally, I am dealing with frequent flash backs of the incident. I appreciate life more and spend more time with family and friends."
What Stands Out
Every individual with a limb difference is unique. Several design iterations were trialed on Cordell until the optimal functional outcome was achieved. Cordell's need to grasp and manipulate large thin heavy pieces of glass meant that his prosthesis had to be optimally aligned for this precision grasp requirement and an intimate fit was crucial. Handspring didn't stop designing until Cordell's goals were achieved.
"My experience with Handspring was great- the team has felt like a family to me. I really enjoyed getting a tour of the Middletown clinic and seeing the lab space. I found Handspring on YouTube and the rest is history. My prosthesis is pleasing to the eye and sleek, almost like jewelry. It is functional and will make it easier to hold glass and tools when I return to work."
Cordell's Advice
"It's important to understand the finance/funding and what costs may be needed to get your prosthesis, especially if you are traveling from outside of the United States. Additionally, there is a time commitment involved in the casting, fitting, delivery, and training required for the prosthesis."
