What Stands Out

Reno and his wife traveled with the assistance of medical transportation from Long Island to Handspring's Middletown, NY clinic for specialized upper limb prosthetic care. He received care from Chris Fink, MSPO, CPO, Leah Sucato, MSPO and Debra Latour, OT, PP-OTD, M.Ed., OTR/L, FAOTA. Reno had the opportunity to trial various multi-articulating hand terminal devices. He ultimately chose Aether Biomedical's Zeus small hand. What he likes most about the Zeus hand is that it has a strong and powerful grasp, is durable, is field serviceable and his prosthetic team can connect virtually to his hands to make adjustments to his settings as his muscles become stronger and he improves his myoelectric control.

What led to the amputation of your extremities and how has your life changed since you became a quadramembral amputee?

"In May of 2024, I was hospitalized for pneumonia and had low blood pressure due to the vasopressor medication. The medication caused my hands and feet to become necrotic. It has become very hectic losing four limbs and having to rely on my wife to do everything for me. I was able to care for myself before the amputations."

What were your impressions of your care here at Handspring and your Excelerated fitting and what do you like most about your new upper limb prostheses?

"The care here at Handspring is absolutely marvelous and what I adore most is that the people here are very patient with their patients. They are very dedicated to making you independent.  Laura, Chris, Leah and Debi have been amazing!! I love that I am learning how to do things independently again. I love knowing that it's gonna get easier for me to things on my own again."

Reno's Advice

"First and foremost you have to learn to be patient with yourself and have the will power and desire to keep moving forward throughout your life. My advice for new amputees is to surround yourself around positive people."
